  • Description

Fr. Anthony G. Schirmann, SJ wrote this novena of the North American Martyrs in the hopes that "these sainted martyrs whose blood enriched our American soil may be better known and loved by us Americans of the twentieth century who share the heritage of their Faith and who must carry on with their missionary courage." It was first published by the Jesuit Mission Press in 1946 and then again in the 1960s by the Martyrs Shrine at Auriesville, New York, where Schirmann served as Assistant Director.

Each day of the novena consists of a historical account of each martyr, followed by a reflection and a set of prayers that includes a brief litany, the collect of the martyrs, and a prayer for petition. A final prayer for the ninth day, slightly modified from one originally for the beatification of Kateri Tekakwitha, honors this great Auriesville saint and fruit of the Jesuits' missions to the Mohawk. Schirmann also abridged this work as a three-day Triduum for the martyrs of Auriesville.

The novena is an excellent way to prepare for the martyrs' feast days of September 26th and October 19th, or their individual dates of martyrdom, including St. Anthony Daniel's on July 4th.
