This novena to the Canadian Martyrs was written by Fr. Edward James Devine, S.J. of Toronto, a noted author and speaker whose historical research was instrumental in advancing the martyrs' causes prior to their canonization.
The novena dedicates a day to each of the eight martyrs plus one to Our Lady of Martyrs. Each day begins with a historical account, followed by a reflection and then a Collect and a prayer of petition.
This is an excellent devotion for the nine days leading up to the traditional feast of the Canadian Martyrs on September 26th, and is particularly oriented toward the Shrine of the Canadian Martyrs and Ste-Marie among the Hurons in Midland, Ontario. The histories, reflections, and prayers also work well for single-day devotions to honor each martyr throughout the year or on their death days, such as March 16th for St. Jean de Brebeuf and October 18th for St. Isaac Jogues.
